As the South Korean entertainment community mourns the loss of one of its prominent figures, the circumstances surrounding Lee Sun-kyun’s death and the ongoing investigation into his alleged drug use continue to draw attention. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by individuals in the public eye, even after achieving considerable success in their careers.
In the first inquiry on October 28, the actor said sorry for causing a letdown and expressed regret for his family’s distress. He stated he was tricked into taking drugs, including marijuana, by a hostess at a fancy Seoul bar who then tried to blackmail him. Despite passing two drug tests during the police investigation, he willingly took a lie detector test to show he was innocent and to reveal the hostess’s alleged deceit.
Lee Sun-Kyun Found Dead in a Car
South Korean news agency Yonhap said Lee was found dead in a car in a Seoul park on Wednesday morning. According to Yonhap, Lee’s wife told the police he had left home, and she found a note that looked like he might have taken his own life.
Local news says Lee was being checked for using drugs that are not allowed. In the past few weeks, the South Korean government has been working harder to stop illegal drugs. This has caused many famous people, like actors, singers, rich people, and even K-pop star G-Dragon, to be accused. However, G-Dragon was declared not guilty last week.
Lee also acted in the first Korean-language series by Apple TV+, a sci-fi thriller titled “Dr. Brain,” produced in 2021.
However, the recent inquiry into supposed drug use significantly impacted him despite his fame, resulting in extensive coverage by tabloids.
In South Korea, a person found guilty of breaking strict drug laws may face up to six months in jail, and repeat offenders or dealers could be sentenced to as much as 14 years.
The nation’s drug policy is recognized as one of the harshest globally, a stance strengthened by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s call for a “war on drugs” earlier this year.
